Today is the third day of protest in front of the UNHCR office in Qamişlo after the announciation of a fire that broke out on Imralı Island where A. Öcalan is held prisoner. He has been held in solitary confinement by the Turkish state for 21 years. His lawyers and his family demand immediate access to the kurdish leader. Since 7 August 2019 until today, talks with him on Imrali have been prevented and his situation remains unclear.
The Asrın Law Office, which represents the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan released a statement:
“On 27 February 2020, a report appeared in the media about a fire on the island of Imrali. Since 7 August 2019 until today, talks with our clients on Imrali have been prevented. We have no information about them. For this reason we do not know any details about the fire that has broken out and have only heard about it from the media. In order to be able to see the state of health of our clients and the situation of the prison and to remedy our concern, we have submitted applications to the Ministry of Justice and the Chief Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa. We are following the events closely. We remind you that under the conditions of isolation any kind of news must be dealt with seriously. We call for public attention on the matter.”
In many cities of nothern Syria protests and demostrations took place. In Qamişlo hundreds of people are taking the streets to protest against the imprisonment and the conditions in which their leader in held.
Members of the women´s movement Kongreya Star call on international institutions to fulfill their responsibilities, stating that their action will continue until Öcalan is heard from.
